Parental Involvement

Research in the world of speech-language pathology is growing. The literature increasingly discusses the frequency, quantity, and quality of exposure. Great, finally some evidence-based data to integrate into our practice! 🥳

The reality is that you see children once a week in your office, sometimes for only 6 sessions. It's possible that progress may be slow, or even barely visible. That's normal. Children with language challenges learn more slowly, at their own pace. We don't work miracles in an hour a week.

WHAT IS PARENTING PARTNERSHIP?

Parental partnership means transmitting your professional knowledge to parents. It's about giving them tools, but above all, guiding and supporting them so that they too can support their child's language development. Supporting parents means forming a team with them, because they are the key to success.

To involve parents in interventions, you don't have to change your way of working overnight. Integrating home videos, asking parents about their priorities or observations, scheduling some meetings with just the parent; these are small changes that will have an impact.

The important thing is to respect your limits and preferences, while considering those of the family you are supporting, and we are here to help you!

FAQ

Will this workshop provide us with tools specific to our needs and those of the families we work with (i.e., families from diverse cultural backgrounds, disadvantaged families)?

Yes, the training will help you integrate parental support by taking into account the reality of the families you support. We will explain how to conduct an interview that will provide you with all the information needed to adapt to different parents, considering their reality, culture, personality, and challenges.

Are you going to address situations where parental collaboration isn't always easy to secure?

Yes! A complete section of the training will help you better understand why the parent does not collaborate or collaborates little, and how to get them to take their place. We will also address maintaining collaboration over time.

Is the workshop also for specialized education technicians or language stimulation workers?

Yes! The training is for anyone who works with children and their families.

Will the training address assessment in parental support?

No. The assessment will likely be a later training to be addressed on its own.

Will you discuss the challenges facing schools and offer solutions related to parental involvement in this context?

Yes! We will take into account the reality of professionals in different practice settings (preschool, school, private practice, public sector, telepractice and in-person).

Does the training count towards the continuing education hours required by the Ordre des orthophonistes et audiologistes du Québec?

Yes. The training is considered continuing education and you will receive a certificate.
